Chicago Tribune (IL) - February 1. 1989

Deceased Name: MARION 'MA' NUGENT, 62.

Marion "Ma" Nugent, 62, the mother of rock star Ted Nugent, wrote a column for the Illinois Entertainer and was considered the spiritual mother of the Chicago rock scene.

Mass for Mrs. Nugent, a resident of Palatine who wintered in High Point, Fla., was said Tuesday in Brooksville, Fla. She died in that city Saturday.

Her column was called, "Ma Nugent's Mail." It was begun in the Illinois Entertainer in 1977 and is still carried in the publication but is now ghost-written.

"Ma Nugent was as effervescent and as energetic a person as you will ever meet," said Ken Voss, founder of Illinois Entertainer.

"To everyone around the Chicago scene in the mid-1970s, she was the mother of the local rock scene. She was out in the clubs until all hours of the night, listening, supporting and rooting for the groups such as the Boyzz and Cheap Trick. Our publication had begun in 1973 and we wanted a letters to the editor column, but one with a little kick so we got Ma to handle it.

Mrs. Nugent formerly also worked in a boutique in the northwest suburbs. Her son, Ted, one of four children is best known for his stage antics and ear-shattering performances and his songs, "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Weekend Warriors." He lives in Hanover, Mich.

In addition to her son, Mrs. Nugent is survived by her husband, Warren H.; two other sons, Jeffery and John A; a daughter, Katherine; seven grandchildren; her mother, Rachel Johnson; and a sister.
